Academics at Thayer Learning Center

Academics at Thayer Learning Center The main focus at Thayer Learning Center is behavior modification, however, students who work their way through the upper levels of the program find that academics at Thayer Learning Center are also on the list of priorities. Thayer Learning Center believes that education is a privilege. Each student is encouraged to not only finish their high school diploma, but to look forward to a higher education. Because of this, many Thayer Learning Center graduates, who were once high school dropouts, have not only completed their high school diploma but have also continued to pursue a higher education at Universities and vocational studies.

During the first 90 days of the program, students are not permitted to work on their normal course work. There are two reasons for this the first reason being they are simply not willing. Most students who enter Thayer Learning Center are defiant, disrespectful, and basically unwilling to comply with their parent’s, or society’s rules. They have no interest in school and therefore end up doing poorly and hurting their academic record. The second reason is most students entering Thayer Learning Center were struggling with school at one point. Some didn’t even attend for an extended period of time. Because of this there are gaps in their education. This makes their coursework very challenging. To remedy this, Thayer Learning Center has students work through a basic academic skills review during their stay in boot camp. This not only allows our teachers to assess each students ability, but also allows time for students to catch up and review the basics as well as appreciate their normal coursework. If students are only attending our sumer boot camp, they will still participate in this basic academic review. This will allow them to return to their schoolwork in the fall ready to focus and excel.

Accreditation

After this 90 day academic review period, students are eager to continue their education. Thayer Learning Center works with Penn Foster, the largest accredited school of independent home study. Penn Foster Career School is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools for high school and vocational-technical programs. Penn Foster Career School is also accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), which is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency. What that means is that all school credits received while attending Thayer Learning Center will transfer back to any high school in the United States. Furthermore, students who do graduate with a Penn Foster high school diploma can rest assured that it is a fully accredited and nationally accepted award.

Because the course work at Thayer Learning Center is done through an independent study program, students are able to work at their own pace. Utilizing our certified teachers and tutors each student is able to receive individual help and instruction not offered in the public school setting. Most students come to Thayer Learning Center behind in their studies and leave caught up, or ahead of their classmates at home. Many students eventually graduate from Thayer Learning Center with their high school diploma and continue their studies on the college level.
